Building management companies across several Dubai residential towers, including one on Sheikh Zayed Road and another in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, have issued fire safety notices to residents ahead of this weekend's Diwali celebrations. The notices explicitly ban lighting candles, burning incense and setting off fireworks in corridors, balconies and other shared areas of the buildings. Management said the use of open flames or ignited materials "poses a serious fire hazard and may endanger the safety of residents and the property," according to Khaleej Times. In response, many residents say they have switched to battery-operated diyas and flameless candles so they can keep celebrating indoors without breaching building rules. This year's Diwali falls during a period when Indian-curriculum schools are closed for the holiday and seasonal markets are being held across Dubai, drawing large crowds of residents preparing for both private and public festivities. Similar fire-safety reminders are issued almost every year during Diwali and the New Year period in Dubai's high-rise communities, since decorative candles and small home fireworks are among the most common causes of fire alarms in residential towers. Building managers are advising residents who want to mark the festival in shared spaces to check with their management office first, and to favour LED or battery-powered alternatives over open flames wherever possible.
